Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, erupted for the first time in 38 years Sunday. Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Friday the lava was 3.2 miles away from reaching Daniel K. Inouye Highway — the Big Island’s main highway.
