In 2015, the U.S. Army redesigned marksmanship training throughout Initial Military Training to emphasize Rifle Marksmanship by adding 9 hours of marksmanship training to the instruction program. After successfully qualifying with their Backup Iron Sites, Trainees going through Basic Training or One Station Unit Training must qualify with their Close Combat Optics before graduating.
