When Rep. Akbar Ali won a runoff special election in December for a Gwinnett state House seat, the 21-year-old became the youngest lawmaker in the Georgia General Assembly. Ali represents House District 106, which covers portions of Lawrenceville and Snellville.
A bill limiting local ordinances on gun safety in vehicles is the first to pass in the 2026 Georgia legislative session. It now goes to the governor.

First day of General Assembly brings in themes of ‘affordability’ and ‘kitchen table issues’
Monday was Day 1 of the Georgia General Assembly, and already both Democrats and Republicans are talking about the “affordability” issue. Day 1 also meant old and new faces in the House and Senate chambers. It was Lawrenceville Democrat Akbar Ali’s first day. He’s the youngest member of the House elected at just 22 years old.
The Georgia General Assembly session began this morning in Atlanta. It is pretty obvious that the General Assembly session will serve as a precursor to this year’s elections. But at least it opened on the House side in a bipartisan manner with Miss Georgia,
